2019 Book – Calendar
On the Verge of Change is the fourth book-calendar in the six-year series of Telling the History of Douglas County. This book-calendar for 2019 was introduced at the Douglas County Fair & Rodeo on August 2, 2018. On the Verge of Change focuses on the era of 1930 to 1960 and enlightens the reader of the events and ordeals that shaped the history and culture of Douglas County, contributing to the springboard that would launch Douglas County into the future of massive change and growth.
The On the Verge of Change era served as the mid-rung dor Douglas County’s climb to current day, removing its pioneering innocence and wresting with economic recovery from the Great Depression. The era was time of growth for government intervention and guidance for managing the infrastructure of roads, school consolidation and water. Two wars changed the County’s cultural profile as did the turmoil of National, state and local politics. Agriculture took a big step into new farm and ranch technologies, new land and crop management techniques and evolution from small family operations to the major businesses of dairy products and beef cattle. The era was also a time when small communities and towns began to adopt municipal infrastructure and when people built lasting wealth and structures that are visible today and are a part of our ongoing County culture. 1930-1960 was era of change and growth, metaphorically like a teenage about to enter the world of becoming an adult.
With the inclusion of the citations of research used in producing this book-calendar document along with the well-written pieces about the major influences in the County’s overall growth during these eras, the book-calendar series is an educational piece for the general public and is being used by educators as an educational resource.
