2020 Book-calendar
The Big Change is the fifth book-calendar in the six-year series of Telling the History of Douglas County. This book-calendar for 2020 was introduced at the Douglas County Fair & Rodeo on August 2, 2019. The Big Change focuses on the era of 1960 to 1990 and enlightens the reader of the events and ordeals that shaped the history and culture of Douglas County, serving as the springboard that would launch Douglas County into the future of massive change and growth of the 1990s and the 21st Century.
The The Big Change from 1960 to 1990 addresses the adolescent years for Douglas County; years that saw the County become less rural caused by burgeoning economic growth of adjacent counties that forced quiet, stable, easy-going Douglas County into massive upheavals of evolution. Douglas County found itself unprepared for its new role in becoming the bedroom residential area for metropolitan and business expansion smashing through its borders. Subdivision seeding and housing development, structural changes with fast, moving transportation services and the Interstate Highway system, changing water rules, small government turmoil in planning, law enforcement, education consolidation and the accelerating of community expansion forced County government adaptation, strategic and tactical changes and growth both in provided County-provided services and government employment growth. During the era some things stayed static, namely Douglas County remained as it had in the past …staunch Republican. However, the era also experienced the intervention of Mother Nature with the epic 1965 Flood dramatically impacting almost the entirety of the County’s geographic footprint.
You’ll enjoy the 2020 The Big Change book-calendar. After reading it, you will likely wonder, “…was the County now well-prepared for the explosive growth comes in the 1990s and the 21
